APGAR?!

2009 December 9
by fadoula

Invented by Dr. Virginia Apgar, American pediatrician, the APGAR consists of an observation of newborn, calculated on 10 points and observed at 1 minute, 3 minutes and 5 minutes of life (although often it’s observed at 1 and 5 minutes of life).  If necessary, a reassessment may be made at 10minutes.  So we observe:

Heartbeat;
none = 0 points
<100 = 1 point
> 100 = 2 points

Respiratory efforts;
none = 0 points
irregular breathing = 1 point
breathes or cries = 2 points

Muscle tone;
none = 0 points
a little bit = 1 point
good = 2 points

Reflexes to stimulation;
aucun=0 point none = 0 points
grimace, reacted a little = 1 point
coughs, sneezes, responds well = 2 points

Coloration of skin;
blue gray, white = 0 points
pink, blue extremities = 1 point
completely pink = 2 points

Each observation is recorded on two points, the aim being to collect the maximum number of points. The data collected are used to have a summary of the status of baby. Healthy babies have generally APGAR of 7 -10 at 1 minute of life and 9 -10 at 5 or 10. The results are often higher during the second observation, because baby has had time to adjust a bit to big changes experienced. An APGAR 0f 4 -6 at 1 minute of life means that baby need stimulation and care; an APGAR of 0-3 at 1 minute often leads resuscitation. Doctors and midwives are used to do this, just by watching baby they accumulate points, quantify and qualify results and know what to do next with this little one; put him down on mommy belly or give him some little help, often just a little bit of oxygen and a vigourous massage, what can be done… on mommy belly!

Re-humanize birth…

2009 November 26

Different specialists are skilled to guide you through pregnancy and childbirth, but you must be totally convinced that the best guide, it’s you, you who give birth and not someone who makes you give birth.

It is a process that belongs to you, which comes from deep within,  a team work between you and your child, a merger and a full complementarity. Trust, trust in you and in your capacity as a woman, trust your baby and trust your spouse or any other important person who will be at your side, ready to accompany you and live with you these wonderful moments or “giving”  life makes sense …

It exists throughout the world and since time immemorial, men and women who have decided to devote themself fully to humanization of birth. Together, they know how to process the storm of birth in waves over which it can be fun to let us go … Among them are doctors, nurses and midwives who believe, who believe that pregnancy and the childbirth must be conducted under conditions where the woman, their emotions, feelings, experiences and power are the basis of motherhood. For them, the birth of a child must be in the highest respect for human life and they are fighting to change protocols, to soften transition between the matrix and the world, between a woman and a woman-mother. Also share this passion, doulas and perinatal educators, women of heart trained to prepare, accompany and support women and couples in these moments of life where unknown prevails usual.

That’s our motivation …
